How to Draw Hone Onna from Hell Girl

Let’s learn how to draw Hone Onna from Hell Girl today!
Hone Onna (骨女) is one of the main protagonists of Jigoku Shoujo series. She had been a geisha named Tsuyu who was betrayed by a man whom she had fallen in love with after he sold her to a brothel. Tsuyu was betrayed again when she attempted to arrange the escape of a fellow geisha. Because of this she was later murdered and thrown into the river afterward. Then she was transformed into a yōkai Hone Onna, which literally means “bone woman”, which reflects her ability to expose the bones in her body to scare the victims. Hone Onna researches the people who make a contract via Hell Correspondence, a supernatural system that allows people to take revenge by having other people sent to Hell.

Hone Onna appears to be a beautiful, attractive woman in a blue kimono and a dark blue border lining, with its red obi tied in front—the trademark of a prostitute. For her footwear, she wears a pair of white jika-tabi and a pair of black zori. Her long black hair is almost always tied up in a traditional Japanese way by a decorative clip with long hair strands hanging on the both sides. Her eyes have light brown color. Hone Onna usually infiltrates human society in casual clothing to investigate cases, on these occasions she tends to use the pseudonym “Sone Anna”. She keeps her hair untied or more uncommonly keeps it tied in a ponytail and she also wears red colored lipstick.

She becomes the straw doll when necessary by tossing her red obi strap over her neck. As a straw doll, she appears to be dark red in color, with a red string tied around her neck. Hone Onna also seems to have some skill as a contortionist, which allows her to squeeze into very small places. She can expose the bones in her body, scaring the target of the grudge.

Hone Onna maintains a mild manner most of the times. When she does lose her temper, its usually over simple things, but she never really loses her temper to a great extent. She sometimes expresses concern and sympathy about certain people and events. Hone Onna seems to suffer from mild vanity and gets annoyed when she is called “old lady”.

Step 1

As always all the blue and green lines are just construction lines and will be erased later so do not push on your pencil too much ^_^ I will try to be super efficient with the text so will only describe steps that require some explanation.
Make sure to leave enough free space on paper for next steps. You can see how much space you will need from the size of the paper on this picture.

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Lighten all the construction lines by “stamping” the kneaded eraser on the paper. Make sure to refer to the picture bellow as you need to ink only some parts of the construction lines.

Step 10

Wait till the ink is nice and dry and erase all the construction lines.

Step 11

To add colors, make sure to sketch the color outlines with the right color or pencil first.

If your goal is to become a real Mangaka and design your own manga characters make sure to try to draw Hone Onna from memory several times. Always compare the drawing to the original and correct any mistakes you see. Do this till you are happy with the result. It doesn’t have to look exactly the same, don’t sweat the details. The point is that you get the main shapes right and that it looks good. This is the best way to build a huge library of manga shapes in your memory that you can use to draw and design your own manga characters ^_-.

Draw with passion! ^_^
